With the end of school and the sports year, The Graham Leader takes a look back and ahead for the Graham Steers. In this edition of The Graham Leader, we will look back at the 2021 season for Steers football.

Do not call it a rebuild. Although the Steers had a lot of new faces in key positions, the Steers still had nine returning starters.

Defensively, the Steers had Hugo Murillo and Lawson Wenninger returning from 2020. Parker Johnson and Armando Anaya provided the much-needed experience to a young offensive line. Freshman quarterback Ty Thompson had experience to rely on with receivers Ryan Grimsley and Tre Alveraz. However, it was the ground game the Steers depended on with 1,149 yards from junior Noah Jilek.

What looked like a blow-out victory early in the first half of the Steers’ season-opener at home against Alvarado proved to be anything but said blow-out. After taking a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter, the Steers gave up 35 points from the midway point of the second quarter through the end of the game.
