With spring sports in full swing and winter seasons concluding, two Graham athletes are being recognized for their efforts at plate and on the soccer field.

Jansyn Louder, of the Lady Blues, and Timmy Thetford, of the Steers, are being recognized by The Graham Leader as Athletes of the Week.

Jansyn Louder, Lady Blues Softball

The Lady Blues captured their third win of the season earlier in the week against the Windthorst Trojanettes, rallying from a five-run deficit to take a thrilling 7-6 victory.

In the matchup that took place Tuesday, March 3 the Lady Blues were trailing 5-0 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, but then the team’s offense exploded.

The Lady Blues collected five runs of their own in that half of the inning on a bevy of contact plays. However, the play that ultimately gave them the lead would come one inning later in the bottom of the sixth, and that play belonged to Louder.

Louder stepped into the batter’s box with the potential go-ahead run 90 feet away. Kerstin Schupbach kicked off the inning with a double into left field that immediately put her in scoring position.

Ruby Shaffer followed this up by laying down a sacrifice bunt to move Schupbach over to third, and now it was Louder’s turn. With just one out, all Louder needed to do was put the ball in play to bring home the runner, and she did.

Louder made solid contact with a ball and grounded it to Windthorst’s shortstop. Even though Louder grounded out on the play, it was enough to drive in Schupbach and give the Lady Blues their first lead of the game 6-5.

Timmy Thetford, Steers Soccer

It has been an up and down season for the Steers all year long but fortunately for Graham, the team was able to end their regular season off on a high note.

The Steers entered into a matchup Tuesday, March 3 against the Mineral Wells Rams and came away with a 2-1 victory.

The team was able to find the back of the net twice, with their first goal belonging to Thetford. He fired a penalty kick past the Rams’ goal keeper early in the game to help seal the win.

The Steers will continue to look for standout performances like Thetford’s as they move into the future of their program.
