Another familiar face from Graham Athletics is going to be representing the community this summer. Steers catcher Tripp Mahaney will be playing for team Texas in the High Plains Shootout tournament.

Mahaney, a rising senior for the Steers, was the first athlete under head coach Allen McGee who earned the honors to participate in the tournament.

“I’ve been coaching for a long time and this is the first time I’ve had a player selected to this all star game,” McGee said. “Super proud of Tripp on this accomplishment.”

The High Plains Shootout is a three-day tournament, according to McGee. Teams from Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas choose 44 of the best sophomores and juniors in high school baseball to compete for their home state and show off their skills as athletes.

Not only is this tournament a large platform for athletes to represent themselves at a state level, but they also have the chance to create opportunities to further their athletic careers.

The flyer posted to the Graham Steers Facebook page listed exciting information for competing athletes about scouting opportunities.

Over 60 NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA and even MLB scouts will be in attendance looking for potential recruiting opportunities.

McGee had high praise for his catcher both for his versatility in the field and coachability off of it.

“He has played almost every position for us throughout his high school career,” McGee said. “I’m glad we get one more year with him on the Graham Steers before he moves onto the next level.”

McGee said Mahaney has primarily played catcher over the previous two seasons and has developed a great ability at calling games and handling the pitching staff.

McGee also commended Mahaney for his openness in receiving coaching from coach Bubba Brewster, to maximize his potential at the position.

Mahaney will have the opportunity to further advocate for his future in the tournament July 14-16 at David Allen Memorial Park.
