The track and field season kicked off for the Steers and Lady Blues last weekend and both teams had standout performances from athletes across all events.
With things heating up after a cold spell, Graham High School students got their first taste of competition in Mineral Wells and brought home a slew of accolades from the relay event.
This week, The Graham Leader recognizes Andon Masterfield of the Steers and Addyson Weaver of the Lady Blues as Athletes of the Week.
Andon Masterfield, Steers track and field
It was the start of a new season and a way to showcase the skills of the Steers across all events in the Mineral Wells Ram Relays held Saturday, Feb. 22. The JV and varsity teams dominated on the relay with first and second place standings, respectively.
Many athletes were ranked highly in the relay and among them was Masterfield who helped the varsity team in hurdles.
During the meet last weekend, Masterfield placed first in the varsity boys 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.85 out of five competitors and first in the varsity boys 300 meter hurdles with a time of 41.72 out of five competitors.
In the 300 meter hurdles, Masterfield pushed hard and ran away with first place with only 0.10 seconds between him and the second place competitor from Mineral Wells.
Masterfield went onto the Badger Replays held Thursday, Feb. 27 in Merkel and will continue to push past the competition with his team as the season continues.

Addyson Weaver, Lady Blues track and field
When the JV and varsity Lady Blues athletes traveled Saturday, Feb. 22 to the Mineral Wells Ram Relays, they went with a goal of making the top while prepping for the rest of their season.
Both teams were ranked first in the relay with individuals making tops scores across several events. One of those top-ranked athletes for Graham was Weaver, who just came off the basketball season with the Lady Blues.
Head coach Jim Walton said Weaver is one of the team’s most improved athletes from last year.
“(Weaver’s) certainly our most improved thrower (for shot and discus). She is a great kid, and has worked very hard to learn to throw the shot and discus. They are relatively new events for her and she has great potential as a thrower in track and field,” Walton said. “(She’s a) great teammate as well.”
During the meet last weekend, Weaver placed first in the JV girls shot put with her 31-01.00 mark out of seven competitors and first place in JV girls discus out of nine competitors.
