Despite the snowy weather halting Graham and Newcastle sports for much of the week, there were still plenty of stellar performances before the winter weather rolled in.

This week The Graham Leader is recognizing Carmen McGee of the Lady Blues and Braxton Barnett of the Steers as this week’s Athletes of the Week.

Carmen McGee, JV Lady Blues Basketball

The varsity Steers and Lady Blues weren’t the only teams that played games last week to get ahead of the weather.

The junior varsity teams both got in on the action to pick up wins against Mineral Wells.

For the Lady Blues, they were severely under-manned but persevered and came out with a 38-29 victory.

One of the players leading the charge in that victory was McGee.

She led the team in scoring with 13 points, but a key area where she helped to secure the victory for the Lady Blues was at the free throw line.

McGee hit seven free throws on 10 attempts for a 70% shooting night at the line. This came in a game where the scoring differential was just nine points.

Braxton Barnett, JV Steers Basketball

Just like the JV Lady Blues, the Steers were also able to pick up a 49-36 victory before the varsity teams kicked things off.

This was a game where the Steers trailed 18-6 in the first quarter but rallied in order to pick up the victory.

The key player on offense for the Steers in this contest was Barnett.

He scored 21 points on the night with 20 of those coming in the second half to lead the offensive charge.

Barnett showed his skills inside the arc, scoring most of his points on two point shots while also adding one free throw to his total.
