Basketball season has taken over and Graham’s teams are making every game count so far this year.

Both the Lady Blues and Steers have multiple games under their belts already this season and there have been standout players in every game. Both teams are full of talented players who contribute to the overall success of their teams.

This week Rebecca McGregor of the Lady Blues and Tyson Weaver of the Steers earned selections as The Graham Leader’s Athletes of the Week for their contributions to their respective teams.

Each athlete showed energy and fight in all their teams’ games this season and particularly in the most recent ones, as well.

The Lady Blues have played a lot of tough games so far this season and they’ve been tested in each one. As of this writing, the team holds a 3-6 record but they’ve shown improvement in every game.

McGregor brings energy to the court every time she steps on it. She has the ability to provide a spark on both the offensive and defensive sides of the court.

During the team’s most recent game against Stamford, McGregor finished tied for the team lead with 6 points on 3-of-7 shooting while pulling in three rebounds and generating offense with two steals.

Despite still being in just the beginning of the season, Lady Blues head coach Kyle Wood has already seen progress in McGregor’s abilities and her mindset when she’s on and off the court.

“Going back to the (Bowie) tournament I thought she started to look for her shot more,” Wood said after the game against Stamford. “But I think the last four games, the Bowie tournament and then tonight, you see little glimpses of what she’s capable of and being aggressive; she can shoot the ball.”

As the season progresses, McGregor will only continue to improve and make plays like she’s made in the team’s most recent games. She’s a strong teammate who not only supports her own team but the other various sports teams around campus.

“(She is an) awesome kid who works hard. Great kid off the court, great kid on the court. Great as far as a kid that’s just all around supportive of everybody, supports other programs, she’s a good example for that,” Wood said.

Tyson Weaver, shooting guard, Steers basketball

In a year with high expectations for the Steers basketball team, they’ve gotten off to a strong start. Through four official games Graham is 3-1 with two of those wins coming as blowouts and the one loss being by just two points.

Basketball is certainly a team sport and Weaver has been a major part of the early-season success Graham has had so far. As one of a handful of senior leaders on this team, Weaver brings an energy and hustle that other players feed off of.

According to head coach Kris Hise, Weaver’s an all-around player but he really gets things going on the defensive side of the ball by making things difficult for opposing players.

“He contributes defense and effort all the time. ...He’s the one who leads by example, he dives on the floor for the ball,” Hise said. “He shoots like he’s been a starter for me since (he was) a sophomore and it’s never been because of his offense. It’s always been because of his defense and his hustle.”

Weaver has the ability to score and has already shown that this season with 21 points in the team’s victory over Sweetwater.

But he also makes contributions in ways that don’t always show up in the box score. He’s a team player who’s always rooting for his teammates’ success in addition to his own.

“Even when he rotates to the bench he’s the one standing up, yelling for his teammates when they’re doing good things. (He’s a) leader by example,” Hise said.
