While several sports are in the heart of their seasons for Graham, one stood out above the rest for their postseason performances. That would be the Graham Steers and Lady Blues track and field teams.

They both respectively had strong athletic performances in the district championships, and at the area championships saw 11 athletes advance this past Friday, April 11 to the regional championships in Lubbock.

For these accomplishments, The Graham Leader is recognizing Rylan Monsey of the Steers and Hallie Gough of the Lady Blues for their individual performances at the area championships as this edition's athletes of the week.

Hallie Gough, Lady Blues Track and Field

As head coach Jim Walton said, Gough has been one of the teams most consistent performers over the course of the season during her outings in the discus and shot put field events.

That was no different at the area championships as Gough once again excelled. She finished second in the discus throw with her 105-02 attempt and third in shot put with her 33-8.50’ attempt.

“She has been very consistent in her performances all year both in her meet performances and her practice habits,” Walton said.

This statement rings true base on her performance in district as well. In front of her home crowd, she also finished second in the discus throw with her 105-10 attempt and third in shot put with her 33-8 attempt.

Gough will need to excel once again as she looks to advance to the state championships. She’ll need to place in the top two in order to qualify in one or both of those events.

Rylan Monsey, Steers Track and Field

Monsey, a senior at Graham High School, is making one final athletic effort in his high school career according to head coach Gregg Lee.

“He is a senior that came out for track when he didn’t need to. He wanted one more chance to compete for himself, for his school,” Lee said.

Monsey qualified for the regional championships in Lubbock with his performance in the pole vault event. Monsey posted a 13- 6 attempt to be the last qualifier in fourth place.

He also got to the area championships with his 12” fourth place attempt at the district championships in Graham.

The journey to Lubbock this weekend could be one of Monsey’s final chances to shine for Graham.

He’ll need to put up his best postseason performance yet to qualify for the state championships.
