Newcastle Ladycats put scare into state-ranked team

Even though they lost the game, the Newcastle Ladycats showed they can compete against one of the top alpha dogs in Texas high school basketball.

Both teams ran up and down the court using an up-tempo style of basketball early on which led to a 40-point opening quarter. A strong defensive effort in the middle quarters by No. 14 Lipan proved to be too much leading to a 62-48 loss.

Newcastle was able to keep up with Lipan’s talented offense thanks to a big opening quarter from senior Nicole Martinez. Martinez scored 13 of the Ladycats’ 18 first quarter points. The ...
