With a district title already secured, the Newcastle Bobcats went into Friday night’s district finale against the Saint Jo Panthers with nothing to lose, but with plenty of momentum to gain. It’s safe to say things went according to plan. Newcastle once again came out strong in the first quarter, scoring 32 points against the Panthers, before adding on another 31 in the second to trigger the 45-point mercy rule as the Bobcats claimed a 63-12 victory from Newcastle High School. “We played really well offensively against Saint Jo,” Newcastle coach John Eli said. “Our defense got to see a lot of time on the field which is always a good thing. We touched the ball six times and scored six times.” Friday night will see the Bi-district round of the playoffs take place for the Bobcats (7-3, 4-0) as they will take on Gorman (7-3, 2-1) at 7:30 p.m. from Strawn High School, with the winner meeting either Jonesboro or Lometa in the area round of the playoffs. Saint Jo was only able to score once in the first quarter and once in the second as the Panthers were held to only 54 yards rushing on the evening. Levi Martinez put together a solid performance on the night as he totaled 132 yards rushing with a pair of touchdowns, while Mikey Walker finished with 54 yards on the ground. Martinez also finished with 45 yards receiving on the night, with J.R. Gossett adding 35 yards receiving. For the rest of this story, subscribe to our print or online edition.
