Newcastle thumps Woodson on wet homecoming

Julian Menchaca notched his first win as a Newcastle head coach Friday night on a wet and rainy homecoming. Behind JD Brice’s six touchdown-performance, the Bobcats drilled Woodson 45-0. The game was called with 9:05 remaining in the game due to the 45-point mercy rule.

“I’m prideful to be able to earn my first win tonight on homecoming,” Menchaca said. “The tradition here in Newcastle is tremendous and to be able to do it in a shutout is extra special.”

“We have been preaching all week that we needed to fly to the ball and in these conditions we did pretty well. I thought we did a good job of tackling to. We didn’t just have one player getting to the ball, we had our whole defense flying to the ball and considering the conditions it was good to see that.”

The game began with Newcastle (1-3) scoring on its first drive of the game. Quarterback Jacob McMillan pitched back to Brice who outraced the defense 60 yards for the touchdown. 

Brice added his second score on a 13-yard run with 2:31 remaining in the opening quarter. 

In the second quarter, JT Spurlin broke loose for a 60-yard run to extend the lead.
