Newcastle's Eli earns trip to state

It was a special regional track and field meet for Newcastle's Arryn Eli. The junior finished in first in the varsity girls shot put on Saturday at the Class 1A Region III regional meet in Whitney by throwing 33'02.00 to earn a state bid. After throwing 32'04.00 at the area meet, Eli improved on her mark. Eli also competed strong by taking third in the discus with a mark of 112'00.00 and sixth in the 100-meter run. Eli will compete in the Class 1A shot put on Saturday, May 12 at 8 a.m. from Mike A. Myers Track Complex on the University of Texas campus in Austin. The top mark in the girls shot put is currently set by Myeshia Thomas from Amherst with a throw of 42'00.00. . Ladycats super athlete KC Shields placed in three events by taking fourth in the long jump and sixth in the high jump. The senior also helped lead the relay team to a medal. Newcastle's 4x100 sprint relay team narrowly cracked the top-two. Eli, KC Shields, Rylee Hardin and Kelsey Shields had a third place showing with a time of 52.87, which was just an eyelash behind Blum's 51.69 second place finish.
