The Graham Steers basketball team continued action this week with their hometown hosted Red White and Blue tournament while soccer also kicked off their opening scrimmage matches against the Sanger Indians.
The Graham Leader is recognizing Ella Pettus of the Lady Blues and Bryce Martin of the Steers as this week’s Athletes of the Week.

After weeks of buildup of the season, the Lady Blues soccer team got their first taste of on the field action this past weekend against the Sanger Indians in their opening scrimmage match.
The game was played Friday, Dec. 12 and the Lady Blues made their hometown crowd proud by picking up a dominant 8-0 victory over the Lady Indians.
The Lady Blues were dominant from the opening minutes of the first half and were able to notch three goals by the end of half one.
In half two, the offense really erupted for five goals in order to reach the final score. One of the primary players who got in on the scoring barrage was Pettus.
Pettus accounted for almost 40% of the Lady Blues offensive output with a three goal hat trick on the day.
Her first goal came in the first half where she was able to sneak a kick through the legs of Sanger’s goalie on the left hand side of the net. She followed this up with two more goals in the second half to help seal the dominant victory.
After a road scrimmage Tuesday, Dec. 16, the Lady Blues will officially kick off their season at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30 against Abilene High at Shotwell Stadium.
Bryce Martin, Steers Basketball
Graham High School hosted the Red White and Blue basketball tournament from Thursday, Dec. 11 to Saturday, Dec. 13 and it was a tournament of ups and downs for the Graham Steers.
The team finished with a 2-3 record as they are still adjusting to the roster they started with at the beginning of the season integrating recently added players from the football team.
However, the team made strides including bouncing back from an opening night loss Thursday, Dec. 11 to the Valley View Eagles by beating them the following night.
The Steers defeated the Eagles in their second matchup Friday, Dec. 12 by a final score of 37-25. One of the prominent players in that matchup was Martin.
Martin is one of several players returning from the football team and had a strong scoring performance against the Eagles with six points.
He showed his versatility by knocking down two midrange jumpshots as well as two free throws at the free throw line.
After a matchup Tuesday, Dec. 16 the Steers pick things up at Jim Ned for a tournament Friday and Saturday, Dec. 19 and 20.
