Monday marks the start of football two-a-days in Texas. Teams across the state will begin their official preparation for Aug. 26 season-opening games. Following a slate of non-district games, teams will compete in their new districts following the UIL’s bi-annual redistricting.

The Graham Steers will compete in District 3-4A Division II against a completely new group of teams. Fighting with the Steers for a district title and one of four playoff spots will be Wichita Falls Hirschi, Midland Greenwood, Snyder and Sweetwater.

Sweetwater Mustangs

Predicted to finish fifth in 3-4A Division II, the Mustangs are expected to be the team to miss out on a playoff berth. Like the Tigers, the Mustangs lost several players due to graduation. Only one starter returns on offense and two return on defense.

The Steers will face the Mustangs Friday, Oct. 21 at Newton Field.

Junior Malik Brown has shown promise and will take over running duties from Leo Holsey. Primarily a passing team, Brown ran for 468 yards on 74 carries. Holsey, who was a dual-threat quarterback threw for 3,187 yards and 32 touchdowns while running 808 yards and 16 rushing touchdowns.
