Hitting shots proved to be problematic for the Graham Steers Friday, Jan. 6 when the team hosted Wichita Falls High School. Steers head coach Kris Hise said poor shot selection led to several missed shots as the Steers were defeated 62-45.

Combining for 11 points in the first half, the Steers were only in contention in the early minutes of the game. Senior Levi May accounted for all four of his team’s first-quarter points. Anthony Flores scored the game’s first basket and converted on an and-one opportunity, 51 seconds into the game. Blake Vanderburg scored a minute later following an offensive rebound by Zare Mitchell to give the Coyotes a 5-0 lead.

May’s first basket came on an assist from Tyson Weaver with 4:16 left in the first quarter. At the 3:30 mark, Sam Rodgers stole the ball and earned an assist on May’s second basket of the quarter.

After trailing 5-4 midway through the first quarter, the Steers gave up an 8-0 run to close out the first quarter. Vanderburg proved to be problematic for the Steers throughout the game. The Coyote’s junior scored six of the Coyotes’ 13 first-quarter points and hit seven 3-pointers in the game.

The run, which gave the Coyotes a 13-4 lead, extended to 10 points with Landon Fenoglio’s basket with 6:06 remaining in the second quarter. The Steers’ shooting woes continued in the second quarter. Ty Thompson made the team’s first field goal with 4:10 remaining following a cross-court pass by May. The play came nearly two minutes after a pair of free throws by Keion Shead.
