A slow start was too much for the Steers to overcome Tuesday, Dec. 6 while hosting the Boyd Yellowjackets. While able to create opportunities on offense in the first quarter, the Steers struggled to take advantage of those opportunities and fell behind by 12 points. Although the Steers outscored the Yellowjackets in the second and fourth quarters, they could not overcome the deficit to lose 61-54.

Playing a full four quarters has been an issue for the Steers early in the season and it proved to be more than the team could overcome.

Mason Turner opened the game with an offensive rebound and a basket. Thirty seconds later, Aaron McGilvery gave the Yellowjackets a five-point lead with a 3-pointer. Keion Shead scored the Steers’ first points of the game with a successful and-one opportunity with 5:37 remaining in the first quarter. Shead’s 2-point field goal was one of three baskets in the quarter for the Steers. Trailing 9-3, Tyson Weaver earned an assist on Shead’s second field goal with 3:31 remaining in the quarter. Ty Thompson scored nearly a minute later after an offensive rebound.

“Mostly it comes down to getting a rebound and stopping an easy stop, over in transition,” Steers head coach Kris Hise said. “We got lazy on the rebounding, shooting and making sure we had somebody back. (...) We have to do a better job on transition defense”
