From the sidelines to the stands, you could feel the energy during the Steers district matchup against the Mineral Wells Rams. That energy led to an aggressive clash which ended in another district victory for the Steers.
Following a close one-point win Tuesday, Jan. 14 over Brownwood, the Steers brought that same excitement to the court Friday, Jan. 17. Both teams were aggressive out of the gate executing plays from one side of the court to the other.
Ty Thompson, Cooper Corley and Bryce Martin led the charge in the first quarter, with all three making 15 of the 16 points in the first quarter on 2-point shots and free throws. It was anyone’s game at the end of the first with the score tied at 16-16.
Both teams held the line and defensively put up a front while also struggling at the basket to make shots throughout the game.
Moving to the end of the first half, the Steers had pushed ahead with the score at 26-24, a lead they would keep the remainder of the game. Despite being ahead, the Rams were never very far behind and still put up an aggressive front.
Thomason Burkett, Brodie Martin, Thompson and Corley continued to put points on the board and keep the Steers in the lead over the Rams while holding the team to 10 points with the game at 38-34.
The aggression seen throughout the game came to a head in the fourth quarter as both teams made a last-ditch attempt to hold the lead or push ahead.
The scoring for the Graham team continued with the score at 52-36 with less than 4:30 left in the quarter. That same momentum the team had throughout the game pushed them to widen the scoring lead.
Following a timeout with 1:20 left in the quarter and the score at 52-38, the Steers received two fouls together in a scuffle for the ball. Tyler Allen’s two made free throw shots brought the Graham team to its final score of 54.
The Rams would get one more 2-point shot, but it was hardly enough to stop what Graham had brought in the quarter and the game ended with a score of 54-40. The win brought the Steers to 2-1 in district.
Leading in scoring was Thompson with 14 points, followed by Brodie Martin with 12 points, Corley with 11 points, Bryce Martin and Tyler Allen with six points each, Thomason Burkett with four points and Jack Mcentire with one point.
Following a matchup Tuesday, Jan. 21 against Glen Rose, the team will travel Friday, Jan. 24 to Stephenville as the team hits the midpoint of their district schedule.
