Saturday afternoon was a time for celebration at Graham High School. After weather caused Friday’s senior night to be moved to Saturday morning, travel delays pushed the start into the afternoon. The Lady Blues celebrated senior day and coach Ky Graham’s retirement announcement with a 59-29 over the Vernon Lady Lions.

The Lady Lions looked to play spoiler early in the game and jumped to an early lead that held until the 4:55 mark of the first quarter. A combined six points from Morgan Drennan and Kenadi Brown was enough to give the Lady Lions a lead for just over half of the first quarter. It was also the only points the Lady Blues defense allowed in the quarter.

Following Dennan’s inside basket with 5:16 remaining in the quarter for a 6-2 lead for the Lady Lions, the Lady Blues closed the quarter with a 21-0 run. It started with an assist from senior Cambrie Cowser to fellow senior Rachel Grimsley for Grimsley’s second basket of the game with 5:50 remaining in the quarter. Kate Gober took advantage of a Lady Lions turnover to tie the game with 4:55 remaining. Senior Katie Coyac found Cowser in the paint for the lead with 4:15 remaining. Grimsley and Gober both earned successful and-one opportunities in 15 seconds to add six points to the lead. By the time the quarter was over, the Lady Blues had amassed a 23-6 lead.

Neither team could shoot the ball with efficiency to open the second quarter. Coyac hit the quarter’s first basket with 6:36 remaining in the quarter. It took nearly a minute for Brown to respond with an inside basket. Both teams combined for eight points in the first four minutes of the second quarter.
