Graham athletics filled arguably its biggest hole this past week in its vacancy of a Steers basketball head coach. The athletic department filled that void with the hiring of their newest front man Quinton Fossett.
Fossett comes from Italy High School previously where he served as the head basketball coach of the program while also lending his services to the football and track and field programs.
Specifically in basketball, Fossett led the basketball team to back-to-back playoff appearances with an area finalist finish in the 2024-2025 season.
“Coach Fossett brings a strong record of program-building, player development and is poised to lead the Steers basketball program into a new era of growth and competitiveness,” the athletic department said in a press release.
Fossett appears to fit many of the requirements that Graham ISD was originally looking for in a new coach.
The search began Tuesday, June 3, with an announcement on the Graham Athletics Facebook.
First, Fossett will not only take up the role of head basketball coach, he will also have to take up a secondary sport, either as an assistant coach for track and field or the head boys coach for cross country.
Fossett will also teach a subject at Graham High School. Athletic Director Clay McChristian said the available teaching fields currently are in history, science and math.
Most importantly though, it was the attitude and leadership that a new candidate will bring to the basketball program, but also in encouraging students to be active, that won Fossett the position.
“Graham is looking for a dynamic coach with high energy, a strong understanding of the game and excellent communication and organizational skills,” McChristian said. “The ideal candidate will be committed to building the basketball program and continuing the momentum of recent successful seasons.”
The basketball team is attempting to get back to their winning ways legitimately for the first time since around 2018-19. That year, the team finished 24-11 and placed first in the district.
The high school believes they took their first step back towards that success with the announcement of hiring Fossett in a post Monday, June 16. Fossett will get a chance to work with the athletes when their season opens in fall 2026.
