Steers begin football practice with young talent

The 2018 Texas high school football season officially kicked off Monday morning across the state for teams. All teams begin the season with a goal of winning a state championship, but only a few actually turn that dream into a reality.

The Steers had one of their best seasons in school history last year by advancing to state semifinals before losing to eventual state champion, Texarkana Pleasant Grove.

Graham lost 27 seniors from the 14-1 squad. With just five total starters back, there is no doubt that the new-look Steers will have to mature quick, but plenty of talent returns.

Chase Gilmore is back for his senior campaign after rushing for 1,931 yards and a team-high 31 touchdowns. The do-itall back was named the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine District 3-4A Division II Preseason Offensive MVP earlier this summer.

Quarterback Hunter Lanham takes over the reigns from Tucker Horn under center. Lanham excelled as the Junior Varsity quarterback a year ago and is excited about the opportunity that awaits him.
