The Graham Steers and Newcastle Bobcats once again headed out to Breckenridge for another week of summer league basketball. The fresh slate of games took place this past Tuesday.

The Breckenridge ISD Athletic Center opened its doors again Tuesday, June 10.

This week, the Steers played the Olney Cubs and the Munday Moguls. Meanwhile, the Bobcats played the Clyde Bulldogs and the Breckenridge Buckaroos, respectively.

The Steers opened the night in the main gym taking on the Cubs. Graham was very keen on keeping the pacing up in this game, beating the Cubs to the paint on multiple occasions offensively.

The team built a formula of beating the Cubs in transition for fast break scores while also taking advantage of turnover opportunities throughout the contest.

Things turned out to be close for much of the game, but the Steers pulled away, starting the night off right with a 38-29 victory.

They went on to win their matchup against the Moguls in dominating fashion, 46-28. Coach Chris Corley said the team was anchored by Nick Wankowicz and Cooper Corley defensively as they led the team in rebounds, steals and blocks throughout the night.

Offensively, the Martin brothers, Brodie and Bryce Martin, led the way alongside Corley.

“Those three controlled the floor at all times on the offensive side,” Coach Corley said.

However, while the team came into their own on this night, Corley also expressed how there are things to work on that he’s seen between weeks one and two.

“We need to slow down at times and make better decisions on passing and need to get better on getting offensive rebounds,” Coach Corley said.

After starting the night taking on the Bulldogs, the Bobcats took on the Buckaroos in the main gym.

For the Bobcats, this was simply the Tristan Clemons and Keyton Newland show.

Right from the opening tip off, Clemons hit back to back shots and Newland followed this up with a three pointer.

This was a successful formula for the team throughout the contest as they scored on a bevy of midrange shots, three point attempts and layups.

A particularly fun highlight from the Bobcats came off of a reverse layup for Newland early in the second half.

Ultimately, the team lost to the Buckaroos 32-30 in overtime, however they were able to find rhythm in those two who could be pillars for them this season.

Both teams will be back in Breckenridge for matchups scheduled for Tuesday, June 17, including in a matchup against each other.
