Steers defense stonewalls district foes
The Graham Steers enter the bi-district championship Friday against Sanger as 3-4AII district champions. While the offense has put up large numbers, including winning district games by an average of 17.8 points per game, the defense has grown into its own, beginning with a game against Midland Greenwood, one week before the district schedule.
There is little questioning the difficulty of the Steers’ schedule to open the regular season. After a thrilling, last-minute 36-35 home win against Alvarado to open the season, the Steers faced Springtown, Decatur and Hirschi. The three teams combined for a record of 19-11.
Although the defense on the 2021 Graham Steers is not young in age, there was a lot of inexperience. Only three starters returned from last year’s defense. However, this year’s defense is centered around a core of eight seniors; Boston Brewer, Richard Forbes, Brodie Bates, Bobbie Smith, Colton Ligon, Seth Flowers, Lawson Wenninger and Hugo Murillo.
Murillo and Smith are each averaging 11 tackles per game this season. In the district schedule, Smith is averaging 12.7 tackles per game. Smith is averaging 11 tackles per district game.
