The Steers went into their home matchup against the Glen Rose Tigers looking to pick up momentum towards the postseason. That’s exactly what they accomplished with a 5-4 win.
After dominating the Tigers with a 6-0 shutout Tuesday, April 22. The Steers went into their contest on Friday looking for a sweep.
The team decided to go with an unconventional starter at the beginning of the contest. Head coach Allen McGee decided to give Bruin Wright the start over guys like Ryder Taylor and Mike Garcia who have started all season.
Wright put up a strong performance for the team to set the tone of how the game would go. Wright pitched four innings and gave up only one run while striking out three Glen Rose batters.
The Steers backed up Wright’s strong pitching performance by giving him a comfortable lead to work with offensively. Cooper Corley came through with a sacrifice groundout that scored Harrison Brockway from third base.
Ty Thompson followed this up by scoring on a wild pitch to give the Steers a 2-1 lead.
The top of the order went to work again when Tripp Mahaney sent a fly ball to left for an RBI double, scoring Brockway again.
The biggest moment of the game for the Steers came in the bottom of the sixth. Glen Rose came back to tie the score 3-3 and someone needed to come through with a moment offensively. Mason Milton gave the team that moment with a two RBI double scoring Colter Johnson and Thompson to make it 5-3.
That lead was too much for the Tigers as Brockway and Garcia shut the door on a comeback at the pitchers mound.
“I thought we did what we needed to do to win the game. We had some timely hitting and good pitching performances,” McGee said. “It is always good to head into the playoffs with momentum.”
With the regular season all wrapped up, all eyes turn to postseason baseball for the Steers. Graham heads to Eula for their matchups Friday and Saturday, May 2-3 against Lubbock Cooper Liberty in a best of three series.
