The Graham Steers nearly squandered a double-digit lead during the second half Friday, Dec. 30 at Millsap. After leading the Bulldogs by 14 points early in the third quarter, the Steers allowed the Bulldogs to cut the deficit to two points in the fourth quarter before escaping with a 58-53 win.
The Steers only trailed on two occasions during the game, both early in the first quarter. After Trailing 7-5 with 4:22 remaining in the first quarter, the Steers closed with a 13-2 run that extended into the second quarter. Kai Hanug scored the Bulldogs’ final points of the first quarter at the 2:15 mark and the Steers followed with 11 straight points. Ty Thompson started the run with an assist on Keion Shead’s 3-pointer with just over two minutes left in the quarter. The pair connected again when Shead gave the Steers a 12-9 lead. Ben Rodgers closed the quarter with a second-chance basket with 47 seconds remaining.
Shead and Thompson each scored baskets in the opening two minutes of the second quarter to take an 18-9 lead.
The Bulldogs responded with five straight points by Tres Bagley and Braylon Pugh and were matched by the Steers with a 3-pointer by Kolby Spurlin and two points following a steal and layup by Shead with 4:31 remaining in the first half. Both teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half. The Steers took a 32-22 lead into halftime.
