Steers football 2018 schedule outlook

With the 2018 athletic season quickly approaching for area teams, The Graham Leader takes a look at the upcoming season schedule for the Steers football team/

Wichita Falls Hirschi, Aug. 31

After losing 27 lettermen from last season's state semifinal team, the schedule makers did the Steers no favor by hosting a Hirschi team that lost just three games in 2017. Graham defeated Hirschi last season at Memorial Stadium, 42-35, in a Thursday night thriller between two teams that advanced far into the playoffs. The Huskies will rely heavily on TCU commit Daimarqua Foster. The 3-star running back led the entire state in rushing in 2017, running for an astonishing 3,270 yards and 46 touchdowns. 

Mineral Wells, Sept. 7

Week 2 will see Graham head on the road for the first time will take on Mineral Wells. It will mark the first time the two schools have met in football since 2015. The Rams will look to build off a successful 7-on-7 season this summer, when they qualified for the State Championship. Mineral Wells went just 6-5 a season ago, but are returning 35 lettermen from 2017. Running back Khalil Thompson is their go-to playmaker on offense. The back rushed for 1,616 yards and 18 scores a season ago.

Brownwood, Sept. 14

Two historic programs meet in Week 3 at Newton Field. The last three meetings have came down to the final possessions between the two schools. The Steers exploded for 665 yards of total offense on their way to a thrilling 54-49 win at Gordon WoodStadium. Graham fell behind 16-0 before Chase Gilmore delivered a heroic like performance. The incoming senior ran for 313 yards and four touchdowns to help the Steers to one of their most dramatic wins on their way to the state semifinals. The Lions welcome in new head coach Sammy Burnett from Farmersville. Quarterback Tommy Bowden returns after he passed for 2,220 yards and 26 TDs during his first varsity season.
