The Graham Steers opened their regular season earlier this week and traveled on the road for a tournament in Clyde.

The Steers started off the season in style with a bevy of dominant victories to begin with momentum.

The Steers got the opportunity to play against teams like Comanche, Hawley, Early and Tolar and came away with wins in each of those matchups.

What was especially impressive for the Steers was the offensive firepower that was present throughout the entire tournament which ran from Thursday, Feb. 19 to Saturday, Feb. 21.

Head coach Allen McGee commented about their success after the tournament’s conclusion.

“The kids played well this weekend,” McGee said. “You never know who’s going to be on the mound in a tournament. When we got good pitches we didn’t miss.”

In those four matchups the lowest number of runs scored for the Steers was nine and they had 19 or more runs against Hawley, Early and Tolar.

The Steers highest scoring game of the tournament came against the Tolar Rattlers in a 24-9 blowout.

The Steers actually found themselves in some trouble early in that contest trailing 7-3, but the team exploded in the top of the third inning with nine runs.

After Mike Garcia walked to kick off the inning, Tripp Mahaney hit a two run home run to left to make it a two run game 7-5. After this, Toby Boenisch crushed a double to make it a one run game.

Rowdy Bond got tactical on a bunt to drive in the tying run and after this the Steers capitalized on the basepaths to take the lead from the Rattlers. Graham went on to finish the inning leading 12-7 and went on to score the majority of their remaining runs in another nine run top of the fifth.

After this tournament, the Steers pick things up for the ACS tournament starting Thursday, Feb. 26.
