Steers senior ace Ryan Grimsley threw his second shutout of the season as the Steers overcome errors in the first two innings to defeat Burkburnett 5-0 in Wednesday’s district opener at the Graham High School baseball field.

Burkburnett’s Riley Akins opened the game reaching second base via an error in left field. Steers’ catcher Noah Jilek ensured no damage was done on the following play. Jilek caught Brody Choate’s bunt attempt and threw to Ben Williams at second base to record Akins out for a double play. Cayden Blanton flew out to end the top of the inning.

The Steers started the top of the second inning with a second error, allowing Conner Moser to reach first base with an error at second base. The two following Burkburnett batters hit into a pop out and a fly out before Grimsley threw his first strikeout of the game to end the top half of the inning.

In the bottom half of the second inning, the Steers took advantage of two errors by Burkburnett to take a 3-0 lead. Landen Harless reached base when Burkburnett’s second baseman Kaleb Roberts errored on a ground ball. Brodie Bates walked to give the Steers two runners on. The bases were loaded when an error on a bunt attempt by Grimsley allowed the Steers an extra runner. Bates scored on a wild pitch to Tate Loesch. Harless and Levi May, who was running for Grimsley also scored during the at-bat.
