Tradition is a word often associated with Graham Steers football. One of those traditions comes in the form of the playoffs, which the Steers have made for the eighth straight season in a row after finishing second in district 3-4A (II). The journey towards AT&T Stadium and the state finals will begin Thursday night for the Steers (6-4), as they travel to Porcupine Stadium in Springtown for a Bi-district playoff game against the Godley Wildcats (8-2) with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. Awaiting the winner of this contest is a meeting with either Monahans or Denver City in the area round next week. Graham comes into the playoffs on the heels of a dramatic 42-35 overtime victory over Iowa Park last week at Newton Field which clinched the second playoff seed in 3-4A (II), while Godley handled Benbrook 69-37, earning them third place overall in district 4-4A (II) While the Wildcats might sport an 8-2 record for the season, their non-district schedule wasn’t nearly as grueling as the one the Steers faced. None of Godley’s non-district opponents (Whitney, Trimble Tech, Lake Worth, Fort Worth Castleberry, Ferris) finished with a better than .500 record, and only one of them made the playoffs in Lake Worth, who has a 3-7 record. In stark contrast, only two of Graham’s non-district opponents missed the playoffs (Big Spring, Burkburnett) as Sanger, Brownwood, Stephenville, and Wichita Falls Hirschi are all playing in the postseason.
