Steers run over Perryton, advance to regionals in Arlington
It did not take the Steers long to earn their first trip to the Regional round since 2017. With a 49-7 win over the Perryton Rangers at Peoples Bank Stadium in Wolfforth, the Steers await Saturday's winner between Midland Greenwood and former district foe Aubrey.
The Steers received the ball to start and they were off and running. The Rangers were fed a steady dose of the running game, led by Daniel Gilbertson, who finished the game with 18 rushes for 132 yards and four touchdowns. The ground-and-pound continued with five other rushers with three or more runs. JJ Lee added a touchdown to his three runs for 38 yards.
Hunter Lanham only threw 15 passes in the game, connecting on 11. He finished with 161 yards and two touchdowns. Tre Alveraz and Gage Faulk caught touchdown throws from Lanham.
The defense stifled the running game of the Raiders. After entering the game averaging 222 yards on the ground, the Steers' defense held the Raiders to 104 rushing yards. The only score the Raiders could muster was a garbage-time touchdown from Abraham Hernandez with mere minutes left in the game.
The Steers now prepare for a meeting with Aubrey on Saturday at Globe Life Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
The expanded game story will appear in the Nov. 25 edition of The Graham Leader.
