Steers’ season ends in Regional Quarterfinal

The Steers baseball team was swept 2-0 by the Stephenville Yellowjackets in last week’s Regional Quarterfinal series in Weatherford. After giving up Game One in walk-off fashion on Thursday, the Steers were shut out Saturday afternoon. Saturday marked the final game for Steers head coach Jim Bob Williams who will retire this week. The Steers’ season ended with a 28-10 record.

Game One: Yellowjackets 4, Steers 3

The Steers led 3-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. The game unraveled with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Nick Helm was on the mound looking for a save to close out the game. Trace Morrison flew out to left fielder Raider Horn for the first out. That was the final out of the game. Lane West was hit by an 0-2 pitch. Ahead 0-2 for a second time, Helm gave up a double to right field. The throw home was overthrown, allowing West to score. The following throw to home plate was also overthrown, which allowed Hughes to score the game-winning run.

The first inning ended with a 2-0 advantage by the Yellowjackets. Both West and Hughes scored unearned runs to take the lead. The first inning had been a source of struggle for the Steers in recent games. The Steers came back in the middling innings to take the lead.
