The junior varsity Steers showed fight in their come from behind effort against the Glen Rose Tigers. Unfortunately for the Steers, the lead was just too insurmountable in their 7-5 loss.
The Steers got into some trouble right away in the bottom of the first when the team surrendered a leadoff double. The Glen Rose runner then stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly to open the scoring 1-0 in favor of Glen Rose.
Things got even more out of hand in the bottom of the third after an infield single and a steal from Glen Rose, another runner reached first after being hit by a pitch.
With two runners aboard a Glen Rose batter made soft contact back to Case Etling and a wild throw over at third scored another run.
Glen Rose followed this up with an RBI triple to left which plated two more runs making it 4-0 Tigers.
The Tigers batting order capped off the inning with an RBI single into left center field to make it a 5-0 ball game.
“I thought our fight was good. We had a lot of compete to us today,” Head coach Bubba Brewster said. “We just had some minor details get in the way of a victory their and one bad inning. You can’t have those in baseball.”
The Steers started to show fight in the top of the fourth. After a one out walk from Colton Doyle, varsity player Tyson Louder sent a ball flying over the left field fence for a two run home to make the game a 5-2 contest.
Graham followed this up in the top of the fifth with a base hit from Dylan Cox which got him to second base. After Karsen Owens got aboard with a single to left, he used some savvy base running to make a play.
Owens got caught in a rundown between first and second base which opened the door for Cox to score. Cox raced home while attention was drawn towards Owens scoring Graham’s third run of the game.
Glen Rose put two more runs up on the board making it 7-3 going into the top of the seventh. The Steers, down to their final three outs, showed fight in an attempt to mount a comeback win.
Cason Roberts got aboard safely with a walk. Jaden Neal knocked in a run with a base hit into left field making it a 7-4 game. Cox followed this up with a sacrifice fly scoring Neal which made it a 7-5 contest.
However, that was all the Steers had left in the tank as outs from MaCrae Isbell and Ayden McDougal ended the contest.
“We’re just kind of banging balls in the ground,” Brewster said. “We just have to refocus in that regard and see if we can come back out and drive the baseball gap to gap.”
After traveling to Glen Rose to open the series, The Steers came back to Graham for their final game of the regular season against the Tigers in their matchup at 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 25.
