The Steers overcame a slow start in the first half but failed to score in the second half in a 34-17 loss at Decatur Friday night. For most of the game, the Steers struggled to move the ball on offense and failed to contain Preston Escobar, who accounted for three of five Eagles touchdowns.

It looked promising at the start on the Steers opening drive. Freshman quarterback scrambled and earned a first down. The only first down of the quarter for the Steers. That start quickly faded on back-to-back plays that included a Steers penalty and the first of three interceptions thrown by Thompson in the game. Two plays later, Escobar had his first touchdown of the game on a 15-yard run.

The offense struggled for the remainder of the quarter with back-to-back three-and-outs by the Steers’ offense. Kamerin Ferguson scored the final touchdown of the quarter on a 12-yard run. The extra-point attempt kick was short and the Eagles led 13-0.
