The Brownwood Lions snuck past the Graham Steers with a 34-30 win Friday night in a game decided by a handful of plays. It was a blow-for-blow affair with both teams throwing haymakers at one another, and Brownwood just happen to have one extra punch in the form of a blocked punt returned for a Brownwood touchdown. The late fourth quarter play turned Graham’s 30-27 lead into a four-point deficit that the Steers would not be able to recover from. The game opened with a Graham drive resulting in a six-yard Jaxon Brockway touchdown run that was followed by a Wes Martin two-point conversion on a brilliant extra point fake to put Graham up 8-0. “We wanted to get them on their heels early,” Graham head coach Kenny Davidson said. Brownwood scored on an interception later in the opening frame but missed the extra point, putting the score at 8-6 after one quarter. Quarterback Tucker Horn threw the interception off his back foot, trying to get rid of the ball before the Brownwood blitz could get to him. “He’s trying to get the ball out of bounds,” Graham coach Kenny Davidson said. “It’s one where he’s trying to make split-second decisions. He didn’t get down and I was just trying to encourage him. He came back in that second half with a lot of determination. He showed the ability to stay on his feet and avoid tacklers. It was encouraging that he came out in the second half and did what he did.” For the rest of this story, pick up a copy of Wednesday’s Graham Leader, or subscribe to our online edition.
