The Graham Steers have been off to a strong start this season but took their first loss of the year against the Henrietta Bearcats by a final score of 63-39.

With the loss, the Steers’ record moves to 4-1 on the season.

“It’s the classic having to shake some football rust off and fit the pieces together. That’s really what it is,” head coach Quinton Fossett said. “We’ll be fine. We started the game executing a lot. It will come.”

The Steers fought hard in the first half but trailed in both the first and second quarter. The Steers trailed the Bearcats 22-14 after quarter one and 32-21 after quarter two.

Thomason Burkett led the Steers in scoring in the opening quarter with five points on two buckets underneath the basket and a free throw make.

Obed Trejo hit a three pointer and Jagger Nees, Brodie Martin and Nick Wankowicz each hit a two point jumpshot of their own to add to the scoring.

In the second quarter, Wankowicz and Trejo were the sole scorers for the Steers.

Wankowicz added to his scoring total with a pair of midrange jumpshots while Trejo hit another three pointer.

However, the Bearcats doubled the Steers in scoring in the third quarter to take a 49-28 lead and Henrietta ended up closing things out in the fourth quarter.

Both of the Martin brothers and Burkett each hit a midrange shot while Cooper Wilde hit a free throw at the charity stripe in the third quarter.

Bryce Martin hit three free throws and Nees, Brodie Martin, Jaden Neal and Wankowicz each made midrange jumpers to round out the scoring total for the game.

In terms of building chemistry as a team with players from the football team returning, the Steers get a big test for that over the weekend in their home-hosted Red, White and Blue tournament.

After that tournament, the Steers pick things up at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16 against Iowa Park on the road.
