Steers win big in season-opener

The Graham Steers began their second season under coach Kris Hise with a season-opening game Tuesday, Nov. 15. In one game, Hise’s Steers showed what a year of growth and a successful summer program can do with a 76-58 win over Quanah. The 18-point win was the Steers’ biggest win since defeating Mineral Wells 69-42 on Feb. 5, 2021.

Since Hise took over the team in the summer of 2021, Hise has wanted to play a quick, yet physical style of basketball. Quick movement both on and off the ball opened the opportunity for 11 of 12 players who were suited for the varsity game to score points. Three players scored in double figures with no player scoring more than two field goals in a quarter.

Behind six points from Tyson Weaver in the first quarter, including the team’s first points of the season at the 6:40 mark of the first quarter, the Steers led most of the game. A 3-pointer by Jason Sanchez, just over a minute later, gave the Indians their final lead of the night at 5-3.

The Steers responded with six-straight points, including four points on second-chance opportunities. Kolby Spurlin was fouled when he tied the game at the 4:43 mark of the first quarter. He failed to convert on his and-one opportunity but scored again following his offensive rebound. What could have been points from a turnover turned into another second-chance opportunity, this time for Ty Thompson. After a steal, Thompson grabbed an offensive rebound following a missed shot and gave the Steers a 9-5 lead.
