Steers win district finale
When the Steers and Rangers met Friday, Oct. 28 in Midland, it was an important game for both teams for different reasons. The Steers were looking to earn a spot in the playoffs while the Rangers were looking for a share of the district championship.
With a 21-14 win by the Steers at Greenwood’s J.M. King Memorial Stadium, the Steers earned their spot in the postseason, while the Rangers move on to another important game Friday against the Huskies.
Playing without starting quarterback Ty Flowers, the Rangers were held to four yards of passing. The Rangers’ offense depended on the running game of Aaron Fikes, who ran for 201 yards and both of the Rangers’ touchdowns.
The Steers, in contrast, depended on the arm of sophomore quarterback Ty Thompson. Beginning with an opening-drive touchdown, Thompson threw for three touchdowns and 355 passing yards on 38 completions. Thompson had season-highs in passing yards, attempts (54) and completions.
It was the arm of Thompson that capped off a 14-play, 75-yard opening drive. Ty Carter was on the receiving end of a 9-yard touchdown throw for the first quarter’s lone score. The Steers’ opening drive lasted over seven minutes.
