Graham sports is currently seeing itself shift into a transitional period of the year. The academic year is coming to an end soon and so are spring sports.
Several teams are still jockeying it out in the playoffs such as the Graham Steers varsity baseball team, but others are beginning to look forward to offseason play.
Spring and summer leagues are beginning this month and as long as there is sports going on in the town there will be athletic performances to be highlighted.
The Graham Leader is recognizing Addyson Weaver of the Lady Blues and Harison Brockway of the Steers as this week's Athletes of the Week.
Addyson Weaver, Lady Blues Varsity Basketball
Weaver had a banner week for the Lady Blues both on and off the court Tuesday, May 6. Weaver was one of the many athletes from the varsity basketball team who was honored and commemorated for her achievements at the spring sports banquet.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better group my first year of coaching,” Head coach Baylee Thompson Atkins said. “I think they exceeded a lot of expectations so I’m just really proud of them for that.”
Weaver not only earned Academic All-District honors for her efforts this past season but was also recognized as the team’s fighting heart award winner.
Weaver was also able to shine on the court this past week in the Lady Blues spring league opening games Thursday, May 1.
Weaver formed a formidable one two punch with point guard Katy McGehee which lead to the Lady Blues splitting their first two game 1-1 and looking strong in both.
Weaver was a physical presence against both the Breckenridge Lady Bucks and Huckabay Lady Indians. She forced a jump ball in the game against Breckenridge while also providing value defensively on the boards picking up key rebounds.
On top of this, Weaver’s pick and roll game with McGehee led to the latter finding Weaver for multiple open look finishes under the rim and in transition for easy buckets.

Harison Brockway, Steers Varsity Baseball
Brockway has served as one of the many veteran leaders on this Steers team all season anchoring the field at shortstop.
The Senior provided arguably his defining moment with the squad in their win-or-go-home game three matchup Saturday, May 3 against the Lubbock Cooper Liberty Patriots.
Going into the day, the Steers were fighting for their playoff lives after dropping game one of the series to the Patriots the previous day.
After dominating Lubbock with an 8-0 shutout victory in game two, the same could not be said for game three. Graham’s bats went cold going all the way into the bottom of the sixth trailing their opponent 3-1.
After a run scored from Ty Thompson and a sacrifice fly from Ryder Taylor to tie things up 3-3, Brockway provided the biggest hit of the game for the Steers.
The senior shortstop laced a single into centerfield scoring pinch runner Colt Taylor to give the Steers a 4-3 lead in the contest. That would be all Graham needed as closer Mike Garcia slammed the door shut on any potential Lubbock comeback and the Steers advanced to the second round.
“Special moment for Harison getting that hit,” Head coach Allen McGee said. “He will be the first to tell you, he doesn’t care about the credit, he just wants the team to achieve.”
Brockway was also honored off the field for his accomplishments Tuesday, May 6 at the spring sports banquet.
Brockway was recognized as a Second Team All-District athlete for the baseball team at the event.
