Coming out of the Christmas break, there were several standout performances from Graham athletes despite the limited action.
This week, The Graham Leader is recognizing Addyson Weaver of the Lady Blues and Jacob Collins of the Steers as this week’s Athletes of the Week.
Addyson Weaver, Lady Blues Basketball
The Lady Blues returned to action this past week for a slate of tournament games just before their district schedule begins.
However, before the Christmas break, the Lady Blues played a matchup Friday, Dec. 19 against the Ballinger Lady Cats.
Despite the Lady Blues losing that matchup, there were several standout performers, including Weaver.
Weaver scored five points in that matchup on a pair of midrange jumpshots and a free throw and also tallied six steals defensively.
Weaver has been a consistent starter for the Lady Blues all season in the front court. The team will need continued performances like this from Weaver as they move into the heart of their season.
The Lady Blues will pick things up at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6 against Eula on the road. After that, the Lady Blues begin their district schedule.

Jacob Collins, Steers Soccer
The Graham Steers opened their soccer season Tuesday, Dec. 30 against the Wichita Falls Legacy Leopards.
The Steers traveled on the road and despite taking an opening day loss, there were several highlights to take away from the day, particularly on the defensive side of the ball.
Collins had one of the defensive highlight plays on the day for the Steers.
Towards the end of the first half, the Leopards were driving to score another goal from the right side of Graham’s defensive zone.
However, when the Leopards attempted a shot on goal, Collins stepped out in front and knocked the ball away with his head for a block, leading to a defensive stand and keeping things competitive for the Steers.
The team will need to generate more offense in order to come away with a victory. After a weekend slate of games, the Steers’ next contest is at 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8 against Eaton High School on the road.
