Wheeler competes at state powerlifting

Newcastle Ladycat Ava Wheeler competed last week in the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association State Championship and represented her community.

Wheeler was the sole athlete from Newcastle to compete in the state competition held Wednesday, March 18 at the Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg.

During the state championship, Wheeler placed 11th in the 97-pound weight class with a total of 360 pounds, with 125 pounds on squat, 80 points on bench press and 155 pounds on deadlift.

Wheeler, along with fellow Ladycats Kourtney Whitfield and Allison Youngblood, competed Saturday, March 7 in the Region 6 1A-2A Regional Championship at Bells High School. 

In just the program’s second year, they once again saw multiple athletes advance to the regional meet.

During the regional meet, Wheeler placed second in the 97-pound weight class with a total lifting weight of 365 pounds, with 70 pounds on squat, 70 pounds on bench press and 165 pounds on deadlift.
