Leaving the Indianapolis Star, where he was a sports beat writer who covered college basketball, the Indianapolis 500 and more, Mike Williams has taken the mantle of sports writer for The Graham Leader.

Williams has three years of experience in the journalism industry and graduated in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. He is currently working on his Masters in Sports Journalism from IUPUI.

Initially, Williams was drawn to auto race engineering and found a passion in writing.

“I started doing other sports through school and then at the Indianapolis Star, I just fell in love with it in general,” he said.

Williams said working for the Indianapolis Star gave him experience he said would be impossible to get elsewhere in the industry.

“It took me places I never thought I would go, such as the Indy 500 and the NASCAR races and the experience was incredible,” he said.

As the sports writer for The Graham Leader Williams said he is looking forward to the upcoming football season and diving in head-first in all of the sports Graham has to offer. He said he wants to tell the stories of individual players in the community on top of the play-by-plays from each game.

“Telling game stories is fun, but I want to get to know the athletes and I want to be able to tell their stories to the community,” he said.

Being involved in the community is something Williams said he owes Graham for giving him the privileged of sports coverage.

“The community is welcoming me by giving me access to the high school athletes and students of the school and I’m being nosy asking questions to the community, so I think it is only fair that myself and my family take part and get involved in the community,” he said.
