It is the first year for the powerlifting program in Newcastle and one Ladycat will be advancing to the state competition after a promising performance at the Region 6 – 1A-2A Regional Championship.
The Newcastle Ladycats traveled Saturday, March 1 to compete in the regional powerlifting meet at Bells ISD.
Ladycat lifters who participated in the meet were Catherine and Bailey Youngblood, Kourtney Whitfield, RaeLyn Bennett, Camren Mallory, Addison Riley and Jayden Ballard.
Catherine Youngblood will be moving to state after placing second in the 114-pound weight class by lifting 245 pounds on squat, 155 pounds on bench press and 235 pounds on deadlift, for a total of 635.
Also placing in the event was Ballard with a fifth place win in the 165-pound weight class, Mallory with a seventh place win in the 132-pound weight class and Whitfield with a 10th place win in the 114-pound weight class.
Ballard lifted 195 pounds on squat, 130 pounds on bench press and 220 pounds on deadlift. Mallory lifted 210 pounds on squat, 145 pounds on bench press and 215 pounds on deadlift. Whitfield lifted 150 pounds on squat, 95 pounds on bench press and 200 pounds on deadlift.
The Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association 2025 State Championships for 1A and 2A competitors begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday, March 12 at the Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg.
