Lady Blues battle back to take down Stephenville

For the second consecutive week, the Graham Lady Blues softball team battled through adversity to come away with a series win in the playoffs. The team dropped the series opener to Stephenville on Thursday, but bounced back to win the next two games and come away with the 2-1 series win and the area championship. After struggling in Game 1 against Honey Bees' star pitcher Julia Flores, the Lady Blues bats busted out 15 hits and 13 runs over the final two games. Graham (25-9) sophomore pitcher Emma Southerland helped fuel the offense by posting zero's on the scoreboard for much of the series.

Steers walk-off in opener, but drop series to end year

The Graham Steers baseball team put a major league scare into the two-time defending Class 4A state champions. The squad had to replace more than half of its starting lineup due to graduation last season yet nearly delivered one of the biggest shockers in Texas High School baseball by knocking out the champions in the opening round of the playoffs. However, second-ranked Abilene Wylie pounded out 24 hits over the final two games to come away with a 2-1 series win.

Newcastle's Eli earns trip to state

It was a special regional track and field meet for Newcastle's Arryn Eli. The junior finished in first in the varsity girls shot put on Saturday at the Class 1A Region III regional meet in Whitney by throwing 33'02.00 to earn a state bid. After throwing 32'04.00 at the area meet, Eli improved on her mark. Eli also competed strong by taking third in the discus with a mark of 112'00.00 and sixth in the 100-meter run. Eli will compete in the Class 1A shot put on Saturday, May 12 at 8 a.m. from Mike A. Myers Track Complex on the University of Texas campus in Austin.

Bryson Cowboys clinch playoff berth with walk-off

For the second consecutive year, Bryson and Graford met in a do-or-die tiebreaking game to decide the final playoff spot out of the district, and for the second time in as many years, the Cowboys got the upper hand. Bryson (8-5) trailed 4-3 heading to the bottom of the seventh when they put together a little postseason magic. With two outs, TJ Imotichey drew a walk and Ethan Robinson legged out an infield single. The two moved up a base on a passed ball.

Graham track impresses at Region I meet

Seven Graham track and field athletes qualified for the UIL Track and field state meet with top-two finishes in two events on Saturday afternoon in Lubbock at the Region I-Class 4A regional meet. The girls 4x200 relay team of Claire Jones, Allison Lee, Summer Croxton and Rosie Schaffer took home second in the finals with a time of 1:43.89. The time was an eyelash behind Vernon's time of 1:43.89. Records were shattered by the team when they broke a school record Friday during the prelims with a run of 1:44.53. The time broke the previous school record of 1:44.73 from back in 2004.

Lady Blues battle adversity to clam bi-district championship

Sweetwater had all of the momentum after a dominating win in game two of its best-of-three series against the Lady Blues, but Graham showed why they are one of the best teams in Class 4A. With their backs against the wall, the team rallied together in Game 3 to defeat the Lady Mustangs and advance to the area round of the playoffs with a 6-3 win. After struggling against the Sweetwater lineup on Friday, pitcher Emma Southerland was dominant in the circle to earn the win.

Steers fall to No. 9 Iowa Park; preps for playoffs

Chris Dickens allowed one hit over five innings with five strikeouts Tuesday night as Iowa Park defeated Graham 9-0 at Hawk Stadium. The win caps of a perfect district season by the Hawks who are ranked No. 9 in Class 4A by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association. The Steers, who saw their three game winning streak snapped, had trouble getting the final out of the inning on several occasions. In fact, seven of the nine runs scored by Iowa Park came with two outs in an inning. Adam Groves led off the game with a sharp single up the middle before being erased on a double play.

Lady Blues hold off No. 12 Brock in playoff tuneup

The Graham Lady Blues softball teams heads into the playoffs with plenty of momentum after going undefeated in District 6-4A play, the team defeated Class 3A No. 12 Brock in a high-scoring affair, 12-11, on Monday at Graham ISD softball field. Graham trailed 4-1 until the bottom of the third inning. The Lady Blues scratched across two runs on a two-out, two-run home run to left by Alex Husen. The drive was Husen's second homer of the season. Pitcher Emma Southerland responded with a shutdown inning by retiring the Lady Eagles in order in the top of the fourth.
