Lady Blues’ loss tightens playoff race

VERNON— The chase to the Region 1 District 6 title got a lot tighter after the Graham High School Lady Blues fell to Vernon 5-2. Despite going into their final at bat down three runs, the Lady Blues seemed primed for a rally with two runners in scoring position and the tying run at the plate but a rain delay and untimely strikeouts ended any hope of victory. “We had a little bit of momentum going and we put them on the ropes a little bit,” Graham coach Philip Irby said. “It actually started before they delayed the game.

Graham track and field have high expectations for district meet

The road to the UIL State Track and Field Meet in Austin begins Monday in Graham. This week the Graham High School boys and girls track and field teams began the final preparations for next week’s two-day district meet. Graham girls coach Jim Walton says he is excited to see what his team does at district, especially from his talented hurdlers, junior Jasmine Sims, junior Ashley Gallaway and freshman Morgan Shook. Walton said at this point in the season, getting stronger and faster is no longer an option.

Varsity girls take first place at PoJo Relays

Graham’s girls varsity track and field team cleaned up over the weekend, taking 1st place in the 2017 PoJo Relays, held Saturday, March 25, at Porcupine Stadium in Springtown. The girls took the top spot with 213.5 points overall, far ahead of second place Midland Christian School, who had 122 points. Highlights for the Graham girls include Summer Croxton’s 1st place finish in the 200-meter dash and Cassie Russell’s top spot in the 400-meter dash. But more Lady Blues bolted to first place in the event.

Lady Blues start district with win

A killer comeback for the Lady Blues brought them victory during their first district game away at Burkburnett against the Lady Bulldogs on Friday, March 24. Things looked grim for the Lady Blues during the first inning when at the bottom of the first the Lady Bulldogs got two points, one off a fly ball to right fielder Alysia Alcantar and the other off a ground ball to Kaylee Clay. With the game at 0-2, the Lady Blues tried to regain a victory in the top of second but struggled with a double strike out.

Steers start district play by sending Burkburnett to doghouse

The Varsity Steers dominated their first district game with a 15-0 blowout away against the Burkburnett Bulldogs on Friday, March 24. The Steers started their reign of the field early at the top of the first with a ground ball by Ian Villa which caused an error on the shortstop and allowed Jaxon Brockway to score. In the same play Adam Groves advanced to third and Evan Schraub to second with the Steers in the lead at 1-0. A sacrifice fly ball to center field got Kade Darrow out, but gave Groves the opportunity to score and Schraub to advance to third.

Rodeo fun begins Thursday

The Young County 15th Annual Rodeo returns to Graham on Thursday, March 23, with a new, locally-focused event on the lineup. The Young County Invitational Team Roping contest will take place each night of the rodeo, through Saturday, March 25. Clay Burnham, who organized the invitational, said five teams will compete Thursday night, six on Friday and finals Saturday night will feature the top five teams.

Boys at top of both divisions in 70th annual PK Relays

Graham’s varsity and junior varsity boys track and field teams enjoyed the comfort of home while hosting the 70th annual Possum Kingdom Relays Saturday, taking the top spots in both divisions. Meanwhile, Graham’s varsity Lady Blues had a good day Saturday during the Possum Kingdom Relays, taking 3rd place with 75 points in a field of 13 teams, behind Canyon at 172 points and Stephenville with 101 points. The Division 1 JV Graham Girls came in 8th overall in a field of 10, with 23 points, while Newcastle came in 6th with 31 points.

BHS hosts kicking camp

The Bryson High School football program will be hosting a kicking camp on Saturday, April 1, from Cowboy Stadium at 300 McCloud Street in Bryson, featuring special guest Matt Williams, a former kicker from Texas Tech University. There will be two separate camps with current 2nd through 6th graders will having their camp from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. with current 7th through 12th graders scheduled for noon until 2 p.m. The cost per camper is $50, with a discounted rate of $45 per camper for families with multiple campers attending.

Graham falters against All Saints, but comes back vs. Tulia

The Steers lost momentum during the end of the Graham Varsity Tournament on Friday, March 17 and Saturday, March 18, with two losses against FW All Saints, but they ended with a win against Tulia to bring their final tournament record to 3-2. Fort Worth All Saints 2, Graham 1 The first game on Friday against the Fort Worth All Saints was a low scoring game for both teams, who displayed strong pitching games.

Steers baseball goes 3-3 at Gunter/Sanger Tournament

Graham baseball opened its 2017 season this past weekend at the Gunter/Sanger tournament. The Steers managed to come away with an even 3-3 record. Graham 3, Allen JV 1 Opening day brought with it a first victory. Graham managed to win a narrow contest over the 6A Allen Eagles junior varsity squad. Evan Schraub opened the scoring with an RBI single to center in the bottom of the second. Allen tied the game on an RBI groundout in the top of the third. A fielder’s choice RBI from Jaxon Brockway gave the Steers a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
