Steers fall against No. 11 Argyle

Offensive production hasn’t been much of a problem this season for the Graham Steers. Unfortunately, last Friday night turned into a huge headache. Facing their first ranked opponent of the season, the Steers struggled against No. 11 Argyle, falling 66-42 on the road. The loss leaves Graham at 13-4 overall. Tuesday night was scheduled to be the final non-district game of the season against Abilene Cooper. Graham will begin district play Friday night taking on No. 14 Wichita Falls Hirschi at home. The first quarter was unlike anything Steers fans are used to seeing this season.

Newcastle girls open district 1-0

The Newcastle Lady Cats always seem to step up district play a notch. Friday night began the journey towards a potential playoff berth for Newcastle. The Lady Cats opened district play with a 57-25 blowout victory over Throckmorton on the road. Newcastle was scheduled to continue district play Tuesday night in a road game against Woodson. Friday night, Jan. 13, the Lady Cats play another district game, at home against Paint Creek. There was little doubt who came out stronger in the first. Newcastle held a 15-3 advantage going into the second quarter.

Cowgirls tripped up by Woodson

Last season, the Bryson Cowgirls managed to claim a second-place finish in district and a berth in the playoffs. For the same to occur this season, the Cowgirls have some work to do after their performance last Friday night. Bryson struggled to score. The Cowgirls registered single digit scoring totals in the second and fourth quarters, leading to a 35-30 defeat at home to Woodson. The Cowgirls were set to continue district play Tuesday night against Paint Creek and will be back at home Friday night, Jan.

Steers go 3-1 at Roundball Reunion

Graham winter baseball blanks WF High 18-0

While the biggest New Year’s blowout party might have happened last Saturday, there was another that took place Monday night. The Graham Steers winter baseball team rang in 2017 with an 18-0 shutout over Wichita Falls High on the road. To add to the victory, seven Steers’ pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter over the Coyotes. Graham will be at home Monday night Jan. 9 against Iowa Park with first pitch set for 5 p.m. Five runs in the first inning got the Steers off to the perfect start on the night.

Newcastle Lady Cats survive against KC Houndettes

NEWCASTLE - Basketball is often a game full of second chances. Newcastle Lady Cats player K.C. Shields found this out at just the right time Friday afternoon. Moments after missing the front end of a 1-and-1, Shields gathered herself and sank two clutch free throws with 6.5 seconds left to help Newcastle escape 54-50 against Knox City. Newcastle was scheduled to be at home Tuesday night against Aspermont, and will open district play Friday night at 6 p.m. against Throckmorton on the road. As exciting as the finish was for Newcastle, it shouldn’t have ever come to be.

Bobcats fall to Knox City

NEWCASTLE - It’s been said before that speed kills, and Friday afternoon saw Newcastle fall victim to plenty of it. Knox City’s Greyhounds used a balanced scoring attack along with a fast-paced offense to overwhelm the Bobcats and win 77-34. Tuesday night was to bring the visit of Aspermont to Newcastle High School. Early in the first quarter, the Bobcats struggled to get a rhythm against the Greyhounds, down 9-2 at the 4:45 mark. However, things started to swing in the favor of Newcastle.

Steers snap losing streak with win over Springtown Porcupines

There was a definite sense of frustration in the way the Graham Steers played Friday night at home. After suffering two close defeats by five points or less, the Steers got back to winning ways with a dominant 75-46 victory over Springtown. Graham (8-2) was scheduled to take on Krum Monday afternoon, their last game before the holiday break. The Steers will be in tournament action beginning Dec. 27 at Fredricksburg. Right out of the gate, Graham’s offense went to work, going on an 11-6 run. Springtown though made a run to close the gap to five points at 18-13 going into the second quarter.
