Graham stops Abilene Cooper in final non-district tilt

If there’s one thing the Graham Steers didn’t need going into district play, it was a losing streak. Tuesday night almost saw a worse-case scenario come true. Almost. Thanks to three players in double figures, Graham was able to fend off a stubborn Abilene Cooper squad. GHS moved to 14-4 overall with a 74-69 victory. Friday night was scheduled to be the district opener against No. 14 Wichita Falls Hirschi. District play will continue Tuesday night Jan. 17 against No. 10 Burkburnett on the road beginning at 7:30 p.m. For most of the first half, it seemed Graham was in control.

Lady Blues JH teams sweep Iowa Park

Following an extended break for the holiday season, the Graham Lady Blues junior high teams have made up for lost time. Two road games in the past week, against McNeil and Iowa Park, let GJHS get 2017 off to a flying start. All of the Lady Blues junior high teams were scheduled to be in action at the annual Make it for Martin Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 14 at Graham Junior High. On Thursday, Jan. 19, the Lady Blues squads will be back in action at home against Barwise, with games beginning at 4:30 p.m. The final home game of the season for the Lady Blues junior high teams will be on Jan.

Bryson Cowgirls, Cowboys suffer non-district defeats to NCTA, Era

By Evan Grice sports@grahamleader.com During the course of a district campaign, surprises can come at any turn. Sometimes they can turn into good things like they did Tuesday night for Bryson. Because Paint Creek forfeited its girls district schedule, the Cowgirls played a non-district game against North Central Texas Academy. The Cowboys, meanwhile, went against the Era Hornets in their last non-district game of the season. Both the Cowgirls and Cowboys were scheduled to be at home Friday night taking on Graford in district play.

Newcastle Lady Cats stop Woodson

Road contests in district play can either build character or destroy it. Tuesday night brought with it the second straight such contest for the Newcastle Lady Cats. And just like the first it was passed with flying colors. Four quarters of double-digit scoring were more than enough to lead Newcastle to a 64-48 victory over Woodson. With the win, the Lady Cats moved to 11-10 overall and 2-0 in district play. Friday night was scheduled to see the Lady Cats take on Paint Creek. However, the Lady Pirates have forfeited their remaining district schedule for the season.

Lady Blues tame Vernon Lady Lions in district opener

While most of Texoma was freezing Friday afternoon, the Graham Lady Blues were turning up the heat to begin district play. A slow start to the first quarter was quickly overcome, and the Lady Blues moved to 10-10 overall and 1-0 in district play with a 69-39 victory over the Vernon Lady Lions from Graham High School. Graham drew the open date in district Tuesday night, and will be back in action Friday night, Jan. 13, playing host to the Wichita Falls Hirschi Lady Huskies beginning at 6 p.m.

Steers fall against No. 11 Argyle

Offensive production hasn’t been much of a problem this season for the Graham Steers. Unfortunately, last Friday night turned into a huge headache. Facing their first ranked opponent of the season, the Steers struggled against No. 11 Argyle, falling 66-42 on the road. The loss leaves Graham at 13-4 overall. Tuesday night was scheduled to be the final non-district game of the season against Abilene Cooper. Graham will begin district play Friday night taking on No. 14 Wichita Falls Hirschi at home. The first quarter was unlike anything Steers fans are used to seeing this season.

Newcastle girls open district 1-0

The Newcastle Lady Cats always seem to step up district play a notch. Friday night began the journey towards a potential playoff berth for Newcastle. The Lady Cats opened district play with a 57-25 blowout victory over Throckmorton on the road. Newcastle was scheduled to continue district play Tuesday night in a road game against Woodson. Friday night, Jan. 13, the Lady Cats play another district game, at home against Paint Creek. There was little doubt who came out stronger in the first. Newcastle held a 15-3 advantage going into the second quarter.

Cowgirls tripped up by Woodson

Last season, the Bryson Cowgirls managed to claim a second-place finish in district and a berth in the playoffs. For the same to occur this season, the Cowgirls have some work to do after their performance last Friday night. Bryson struggled to score. The Cowgirls registered single digit scoring totals in the second and fourth quarters, leading to a 35-30 defeat at home to Woodson. The Cowgirls were set to continue district play Tuesday night against Paint Creek and will be back at home Friday night, Jan.

Steers go 3-1 at Roundball Reunion

If there’s one thing the Graham Steers have coming into the new year, it’s momentum. To finish out 2016 last week, GHS traveled to the Roundball Reunion in Fredericksburg for four games. Graham managed to put together a 3-1 record at the event, leaving them at 12-3 for the season. The Steers were scheduled to host Brownwood Tuesday night and will be on the road against No. 11 Argyle Friday night.
