Red Top Rivalry in full swing as both teams seek district title

As far as local sports go, the “Red Top Rivalry” (check your local maps) between Bryson and Newcastle has always been a bit overlooked. But this year, both six-man schools proudly possess top 25 state rankings, and a district championship will be on the line when the two meet up Friday night in Newcastle. Newcastle, the No. 19 team in the state, has played a mammoth of a schedule that puts them at a 4-3 record. On the other hand, No.

Cowboys suffer first loss of the season to Gorman

The Bryson Cowboys’ undefeated streak ended at five after Friday's 78-58 loss to Gorman at home. Things were going well for the Cowboys after getting up 22-8 in the first quarter, but Gorman took a two-point lead into the halftime break after outscoring Bryson 24-8 in the second quarter. "We started off great, scoring immediately and then forcing a punt to go up 16-0," Bryson coach Jason Briles said. "But then Gorman got settled in." Turnovers didn't help the Cowboys either. Bryson had two fumbles and three turnovers-on-downs inside the Gorman 10-yard line that proved to be the difference in t

Bryson wins after tough homecoming start

The Bryson Cowboys won their fifth straight game with a 61-16 homecoming win over Woodson. Though the final outcome seemed ideal, the first quarter ended in a 16-16 tie before the Cowboys ran away with the victory. “It was a tough first quarter,” Bryson coach Jason Briles said. “I think we were distracted by all the homecoming activities and it took us a quarter to get our bearings.” It wasn’t until defensive coordinator Hunter Hayes began making substitutions that the Cowboys began to find their stride. “The bench speaks much louder than me,” Hayes told Briles during the contest.
