Grace honored at Booster Bash

The annual Booster Bash is typically a joyous community pep-rally to kick off the fall sports season, but things took an emotional turn toward reverence Monday night when Steers head coach Kenny Davidson announced that Graham’s helmets would feature a “TG” emblem to honor coach Tommy Grace, who passed away this summer. “We miss him so much,” Davidson told the crowd while fighting tears in a heartfelt speech.“We had to do something to honor him.” Davidson presented a helmet to Grace’s widow, Debra, while the ample crowd at Newton Field gave a standing ovation for the beloved coach, his wife, an

Blues seek redemption at home tourney

A year ago, a fourth-place finish against top West Texas competition wouldn’t have been so bad in the eyes of the Lady Blues volleyball team, but this team is different.

The Blues entered the Shallowater Tournament with expectations of winning, but a pair of tough Saturday losses derailed Graham’s plans for dominance.

“I think the girls realized that there will be times when we’re not happy with the outcome and you have to move on,” head coach Marci Faulk said. “I think that’s what happened with the Denver City game.”

Old High brought house in first scrimmage

Friday night’s storms forced the Steers and Wichita Falls Old High to move their scrimmage to Saturday, but the weather wasn’t the only unsuspected event that occurred when the scrimmage finally commenced. Despite being the first scrimmage of the season, the Old High Coyotes threw a myriad of blitzes at the unsuspecting Steers, something that isn’t usually done so early in the practice schedule. Though the Graham offense was caught off guard by the tactics, the Steers eventually adjusted and made some big plays down the field. Graham head coach Kenny Davidson downplayed the aggressiveness of t

Blues poke holes in Lady Porcupines to win opener

David vs. Goliath might be a stretch when describing the Blues’ season opener against Springtown, but Graham got a victory against a bigger team Tuesday night by relentlessly playing through every volley. The Blues lost the first set to the Lady Porcupines 25-20, but that set up an early teaching moment that could pay dividends as the season goes on. “The second game they came in and had us down,” Blues head coach Marci Faulk said. “We came back to take the lead around the 16th or 17th point and we ended up winning that set 25-23.

Dooley looks like the total package at left tackle

There is a stereotype about offensive lineman that often rings true. The strong, silent type. The “big teddy bears” with gargantuan-sized and soft hearts. Immense power wrapped in a protective personality. They don’t get the attention like the quarterbacks, receivers and running backs; in fact, maybe the best indication of success for an offensive lineman is when they don’t draw any attention. For Graham offensive tackle Hunter Dooley, the shoe fits. The big junior stands somewhere in the ballpark of 6-feet, 4-inches or 6-feet, 5-inches tall, depending on which coach is describing him. He’s so

Hydration key as Steers approach afternoon practice

The Steers practice schedule will change Wednesday when the team begins afternoon practices. The change is largely due to the teaching schedule that begins to ramp up leading to the school year. Davidson also mentioned that the change to afternoon practices gives players a chance to work and adapt to the grueling August heat. “It will be hot on the field at 7:30 p.m. during the first part of the season,” he said.

Modern statistics encroaching on the magic of sports

Smart people can be really dumb. Monday night I watched the Texas Rangers come from behind in their final offensive frame to beat the Colorado Rockies 4-3. This all came after I read a blog post dated June 23 that detailed the many reasons why the Rangers were headed for disaster despite having a 10-game lead in their division with the best record in the American League at the time. A “mirage,” I believe, is the nickname the writer used for the first-place ball club. As of Aug.

Houser heading in right direction for Cowboys

Brayden Houser will answer “fishing” without hesitation when asked what his hobbies are outside of football. Particularly, fishing for catfish on the Brazos River with friend and teammate Paul Davidson. The slow-paced pastime may be Houser’s favorite hobby, but on the field the Bryson junior is anything but torpid. “He just makes people miss,” Bryson head coach Jason Briles said. “He’s not terribly fast, but he’s shifty.
