Lady Blues stung by Honeybees

The Graham Lady Blues weren’t able to pick up a victory against the Stephenville Honeybees in their latest district showing. 

The team dropped the match in three sets in a hard fought contest. 

“I said (to the team) tonight you had some adversity thrown at you. We all got a little tight and a little nervous,” Lady Blues head coach Marci Faulk said.

Steers dominate homecoming with shutout victory over Bridgeport

The Graham Steers made sure everyone in attendance at their homecoming game went home with a smile on their face as they dominated the Bridgeport Bulls, 56-0. 

This victory Friday, Oct. 17 was arguably the team’s most complete win of the entire season. 

“That’s Graham Steer football when both sides of the ball are clicking,” head coach Clay McChristian said to his team after the game. “Enjoy this win. For you graduating seniors you always want to go out on a homecoming win.”

Bobcats run over Knox City in latest district win

It was a shutout victory for the Newcastle Bobcats after defeating the Knox City Greyhounds by a score of 52-0. 

The win Friday, Oct. 17 moves the Bobcats to 2-0 in district play and 5-2 overall on the season. 

As has been the case for the Bobcats this year, when they pick up dominant victories such as this one they need complete team efforts in order to get the job done.

Ladycats sweep Bryson in district showdown

The Newcastle Ladycats picked up a key win in district play this past week with their victory over the Bryson Cowgirls. This victory brings Newcastle’s district record to 2-2 so far. 

The matchup took place Tuesday, Oct. 14, and head coach Ashley Archer is proud of the team’s handling of adversity so far in this second half of the season. 

“We’re proud of them for showing grit and coming together after a few hard losses. We’re hoping to make a good showing in the last few district games,” Archer said.

Lady Blues lose in five sets to Glen Rose

The Graham Lady Blues suffered a tough loss to the Glen Rose Lady Tigers in five sets during their latest district matchup. The Lady Blues jumped out to a 2-0 match lead but couldn’t finish the job as Glen Rose went on to win the next three sets to take the match. 

The first two set wins were convincing ones for Graham as the team won 25-16 and 25-17 respectively. 

In sets three and four, the team fought hard but lost narrowly 25-19 and 25-23. Set five ended with Glen Rose picking up a 15-6 victory to end things.

Steers go 1-1 in final week of fall league basketball

This week in Graham wrapped up the hometown fall league for basketball and saw the Steers play against Olney and Jacksboro. 

The team finished the fall league how they started, going 1-1 on the night and are now looking forward to regular season play. 

“I’m excited about it,” Steers head coach Quinton Fossett said. “We’re two weeks away from the first practice. I told them we can win a lot of games with that effort.” 

(ASHLEY ANDERSON | JACKSBORO-HERALD GAZETTE) The Graham Leader is recognizing Flor Carranza of the Newcastle Ladycats as this week’s Athlete of the Week. Carranza had 10 digs and 10 serve receptions defensively for the Ladycats to keep possessions alive in their three set victory.

Carranza, Nees named Athletes of the Week

Graham and Newcastle athletics are entering a transitional period between fall and winter sports. Volleyball is in district play and basketball have been working in fall league competitive play. 

For both of those sports, The Graham Leader is recognizing Flor Carranza of the Ladycats and Jagger Nees of the Steers as this week’s Athletes of the Week.

The Newcastle Ladycats had a bit of a rough start to their district run, losing two consecutive matches against Garner and Perrin-Whitt.

Lady Blues take down Brownwood in district showdown

The Lady Blues picked up their second straight victory in district play against the Brownwood Lady Lions in a three set sweep. This brings the team to a 3-3 record in the district. 

The Lady Blues started things off with a commanding set one victory winning 25-17. Set two was a bit more hard fought with the Lady Lions trying not to yield, however Graham still won 25-21. 

The final set of the evening was the most back and forth display from both teams as things went into extra serves, however the Lady Blues ultimately picked up the victory 27-25.

Ladycats drop district matchup against Perrin-Whitt Lady Pirates

It wasn’t the best day for the Newcastle Ladycats in their latest district matchup against the Perrin-Whitt Lady Pirates. The Ladycats fought hard but ultimately lost in three sets. 

In the first two sets, the team certainly had flashes of brilliance, but couldn’t overcome the Lady Pirates’ attack as they lost both of those sets 25-19 respectively. 

The team then gave it their all in set three but narrowly lost by two points 25-23 to lose the match.

Graham loses playoff match to Canyon High

The Graham Steers and Lady Blues played against Canyon High School in the first round of district playoffs. 

Unfortunately for Graham, the teams’ fall seasons came to an end as they were not able to secure the victory. 

The meet took place Monday, Oct. 6 and Graham played in 10 matches overall. On the singles side of things, that included matches for Chris Reyes, who is second on the Steers’ leaderboard, and Keigan Garland, who is fourth.
