Lady Blues’ tracksters prepare to take state meet

Graham’s 4x200-meter relay team said preparing for the UIL Class 4A Track & Field State Meet feels normal at this point.

After six first place finishes in meets this season and a trip to state last year, the Lady Blues are prepared to top last year’s sixth-place finish.

Yet as Summer Croxton, Claire Jones, Rosie Schaffer, Chloe Menard and alternate Cambrie Cowser prepare to head to Austin, they all agreed the feat is special to them.

Stone’s walk-off carries Steers to bi-district title

The Steers finally ended a four-hour game two in the 11th inning Saturday to pull off a sweep of Snyder with a 9-8 victory at Graford.

Snyder, needing a win to force a winner-take-all decisive final game, went in front 8-7 with a sacrifice fly in the top of the 11th inning.

Graham as able to take advantage of the 110-pitch limit in the bottom half of the frame when Snyder’s Leroy Tavarez was unable to start the next inning due to the Texas UIL rules.

Bryson junior golfer Brinkley Richardson is headed to the UIL State Tournament after a successful Region III-1A regional tournament last Wednesday and Thursday.

Richardson shot a 102 on the final day at the Squaw Valley Golf Course in Glen Rose with a twoway tie for second place out of all of the individual medalists. She said playing at a young age allowed her to develop the skills early and allow her to have success.

“My sister started her freshman year and I followed her around while she would help teach me the game,” Richardson said. “I just ....

Southerland leads Lady Blues to bi-district title

The Graham softball team had an all-around solid performance in its best-of-three bi-disrict playoff series against Snyder last week. The Lady Blues eased to a 6-1 win at Snyder before rolling over the Lady Tigers 8-0 at home Thursday for the sweep.

The two wins marks Graham softball’s third consecutive bi-district championship as the Lady Blue softball program has established itself as not only qualifying for the postseason, but having success in the playoffs.

Steers fall in district finale

Graham was looking to spoil state-ranked Iowa Park’s bid at a perfect district season, but the task was a bit too tall. The third-ranked Hawks used a four-run fourth inning to pull away from the Steers, 8-2, on senior night last Monday.

With the game shifted up a day to beat the potential incoming rain, Graham was able to get more offense going and keep the game closer than the teams’ previous meeting last week, but the Hawks showed why they are, once again, a contender for the Class 4A state title.

Nine walks on the mound combined with four errors doomed the Steers.

Lady Blues hammer Iowa Park

After dispatching Iowa Park last Thursday evening by a final score of 13-2, the Graham softball team heads to the playoffs with a ton of confidence.

Following the victory their second-year head coach said he liked the way his team took quality at bats, which led to runs in every inning of the five-inning run rule victory.

Graham track wins Area meet

Graham had multiple regional qualifiers in Wednesday’s Area District 5-4A and 6-4A track and field meet held at Newton Field. The Lady Blues and Steers finished in first place overall out of the 10 competing teams.

The varsity boys rallied from down late to claim first over Snyder by a mere six points. The 4x400 relay team of Will Busey, Greg Simental, Marc Tate and Daniel Gilbertson put the Steers in front for good on the final event of the evening. The four put together an impressive time of 3:27.97 in the race, which was two seconds better than Midland Greenwood’s relay team.

Newcastle star signs to play college basketball

Newcastle basketball player Arryn Eli signed a national letter of intent on Wednesday afternoon inside the Newcastle gymnasium in front of her family and students.

The senior basketball guard will play for Texas A&M University-Texarkana after graduating from high school next month.

After going on a tour of the campus, the 5-foot-5 do-it-all athlete knew Texarkana would be the perfect fit.

“For the athletes they have a special academic advisor to support them and I think that is really awesome” Eli said. “The whole administration really caught ...
