City approves Tennessee, Kentucky waterline replacement project

As part of a continuing effort to replace aging water lines within the city, a waterline project will be moving forward at Tennessee Street and Kentucky Street in Graham.

The Graham City Council met Thursday, Dec. 4 and approved City Manager Eric Garretty to create a waterline replacement project and appropriation of $300,000 from existing funds in the Water Capital Fund for the project.

New details emerge regarding proposed data center

The Project Saltworks data center took another step in its development by having the developers address local concerns in their first public meeting appearance last week.

Project Saltworks is proposed on 867 acres of land between FM 61 and FM 209. The project will support up to 15 data center buildings, substations and on-site infrastructure that the company said will be set back from property lines and local residences.

Remembering animals during the holiday giving season

While the holidays are around the corner and gifts will be given to many in the community, the Humane Society of Young County is seeking support to help the organization facing a high capacity of animals.

HSYC serves as the holding facility for the cities of Graham, Olney and Newcastle as well as for Young County. The shelter also serves as a last resource intake for owner-surrendered animals.

GISD breaking down school finance with Dollars and Sense website

Since launching in November, Graham ISD has been promoting a message of transparency regarding the district’s financial operations, budgeting, tax rate and more through its Dollars and Sense campaign.

The district launched the website to help break down school finance and operations. Superintendent Mary Johnston said the campaign was intended to simplify complex topics such as school finance and the district’s operating budget.

Young County rescinds burn ban

Young County Judge Win Graham rescinded a burn ban that has been in place since the end of September. 

The county judge signed an order Monday, Dec. 1 rescinding the burn ban that was enacted Monday, Sept. 22 by the Young County Commissioners Court. The 90-day ban was set to expire Monday, Dec. 22 unless terminated earlier by the court or county judge.

Candidate filing for March primaries closes soon

With less than a week remaining before the filing deadline in the March primaries, candidates have continued to add their names to the ballot.

Filing opened Saturday, Nov. 8 and the deadline for primary and independent candidates filing a declaration of intent is Monday, Dec. 8. 

As of Monday, Dec. 1, Republican candidates that filed for the position of Young County Judge are incumbent Win Graham, along with candidates Donald Sexton and former Young County Judge John Bullock.

Data center developer to share project information at city council

The public will have a chance to learn more about a proposed data center project in Young County after Stream Data Centers and Headwaters Site Development make their first public meeting appearance this week.

Spirits of Christmas: ‘A Christmas Carol’ taking the stage at GRT

The downtown Christmas tradition is returning this year as actors take the stage in ‘A Christmas Carol’ with Graham Regional Theatre.

Over 30 actors will take part in five performances from Dec. 19-21 at The Perry theater at 521 Elm St. Auditions were held Sunday, Nov. 16 at The Perry theater to select each role.

Performances will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec, 19, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20 and at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21.

City considering debt options for sewer plant, fire truck

The Graham City Council approved retaining bond and financial counseling services as the city considers issuing debt for wastewater treatment plant renovations and new fire apparatuses.

City Manager Eric Garretty gave a presentation Thursday, Nov. 20 to the city council regarding proposed debt for rehabilitation of the city’s wastewater treatment plant and acquiring a new primary fire apparatus.
