Candidate filing for March primaries closes soon

With less than a week remaining before the filing deadline in the March primaries, candidates have continued to add their names to the ballot.

Filing opened Saturday, Nov. 8 and the deadline for primary and independent candidates filing a declaration of intent is Monday, Dec. 8. 

As of Monday, Dec. 1, Republican candidates that filed for the position of Young County Judge are incumbent Win Graham, along with candidates Donald Sexton and former Young County Judge John Bullock.

Data center developer to share project information at city council

The public will have a chance to learn more about a proposed data center project in Young County after Stream Data Centers and Headwaters Site Development make their first public meeting appearance this week.

The data center Project Saltworks is proposed on 867 acres of land between FM 61 and FM 209. The project will support up to 15 data center buildings, substations and on-site infrastructure that the company said will be set back from property lines and local residences.

Spirits of Christmas: ‘A Christmas Carol’ taking the stage at GRT

The downtown Christmas tradition is returning this year as actors take the stage in ‘A Christmas Carol’ with Graham Regional Theatre.

Over 30 actors will take part in five performances from Dec. 19-21 at The Perry theater at 521 Elm St. Auditions were held Sunday, Nov. 16 at The Perry theater to select each role.

Performances will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec, 19, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20 and at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21.

City considering debt options for sewer plant, fire truck

The Graham City Council approved retaining bond and financial counseling services as the city considers issuing debt for wastewater treatment plant renovations and new fire apparatuses.

City Manager Eric Garretty gave a presentation Thursday, Nov. 20 to the city council regarding proposed debt for rehabilitation of the city’s wastewater treatment plant and acquiring a new primary fire apparatus.

Rains sentenced to life in prison

A Graham man sentenced in July to 20 years in prison on a drug charge will now serve life in prison for a prostitution charge involving a victim under 18 years old. 

A four-day trial was held for Lee Marvin Rains, 56, of Graham, before being sentenced to life in prison in the Texas Division of Criminal Justice - Institutions Division (TDCJ-ID). Rains will be required to register as a sex offender.

Authors Day, Santa at the Library of Graham next weekend

The Library of Graham is hosting local and regional authors and continuing a holiday tradition during its Authors Day and Santa at the Library events next weekend.

The events will be held Saturday, Dec. 6 at the library located at 910 Cherry St. Last year was the first time the library combined the two events and there were more than 500 visitors who attended.

Graham Police Department will be providing field training for Jacksboro Police Department officers in an effort to help train and certify the department rebuilding its force.

The Graham City Council approved an interlocal agreement Thursday, Nov. 20 between the city of Graham and city of Jacksboro to assist in providing fully trained and certified police officers for JPD.

A gift to the community: Braddock family Cookie Day returns next month

A local holiday tradition continues next month as Mary Braddock and her family invite the community for cookies at her home in Graham.

The event will be held from 4-6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12 at 1010 Westwood Dr. with thousands of cookies available.

“It means a lot to me and my family knows it does. It’s very, very important to me,” Braddock said in a previous interview. “Cookie Day is my big thing. I save my money all year to pay for the cookies and the ingredients.”

Graham kicking off December with Christmas stroll, parade

Christmas will be in the air next week as the Graham Chamber of Commerce hosts its annual stroll and lighted Christmas parade alongside the Hot Chocolicious event.

The holiday events will be held Thursday, Dec. 4 on the Graham downtown square starting off with the Hot Chocolicious event alongside the stroll from 5-7 p.m.

The hot chocolate competition is organized by the Graham Chamber of Commerce and draws in teams from the Graham Junior High School Builders Club to plan and build their own hot chocolate business from scratch.

Tour of Homes next month benefiting Library of Graham

For over 50 years the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Club has held the Tour of Homes event benefiting the Library of Graham, and the tradition continues next month at five locations.

The tour will be held from 1:30-6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10 with a $20 admission fee at any of the participating locations. During the event, houses are adorned with Christmas decorations and shown off to members of the community.

The homes that will be featured in this year’s tour are the homes of Lexee and Michael Alberts, Kim and Phill Birdwell, Peggy and Reno Sonnenberg and Eric Roye.
